A strange day in the second
division, with the top three clubs all losing away, and the bottom four all
winning at home. Leaders Salamanca were beaten 2-0 by Sporting, with a goal in
each half by Lediakov (penalty) and Jurado. Second placed Las Palmas lost 3-0
to one of the bottom clubs Mérida, and Extremadura were beaten 2-0 by
Osasuna. Salamanca therefore maintain their six points lead at the top. The
fourth and fifth placed teams Levante and Badajoz failed to take advantage,
drawing 1-1 in Valencia, with the league's top scorer Salillas getting a late
equaliser for the home club. Villarreal's 2-1 victory over Getafe, with goals
by Dennis Seban and Craioveanu, moves them back up to sixth, level with
Sporting on 40 points, three behind the second and third clubs. The result also
leaves Getafe back in the relegation zone. Recreativo got their second good win
in a row, stopping on form Lleida in their tracks with a 4-0 victory, but it is
probably too late for them to climb out of the drop zone. Bottom club Toledo
also won, by 2-1 against Logroñes, but they are still 10 points away
from safety. Logroñes drop below Elche (who beat Eibar 2-0) and
Mérida to third from bottom, and their potential new buyer has said that
his company is not interested in the deal if Logroñes are relegated this
season. The judge needs an answer soon, as otherwise the club will be wound up.
Compostela sink back down towards the lower reaches of the division after
losing 3-1 to Leganés, and Tenerife and Albacete did nobody any good
with a 2-2 draw. Tenerife fans called for heads after the match after their
team lost a 2-0 lead against ten men.
