Salamanca's victory last week
over Levante seems to have inspired them, and their bad run now appears to be
over. They beat Tenerife 3-0 this week to re-open a six point gap at the top of
the table, with goals from Sandro, Taira and Barbará from the penalty
spot. Second placed Las Palmas could only manage a 0-0 draw against bottom club
Toledo, and Extremadura draw level with them after their 3-0 win against Eibar,
who were doing alright until they had a man sent off in the second half. Viaud
scored from the resulting penalty, and Tito added two more. It is now Levante's
turn to lose gas, and they were beaten again 2-0 by struggling Albacete, with
both sides down to 10 men at the end. Badajoz and Villarreal both lost the
chance to catch up with the leaders, cancelling each other out in a 1-1 draw,
and Sporting did even worse, losing 4-1 at Lleida who now move into the
reckoning themselves in eighth place. The cup heroics by Osasuna, Mérida
and Compostela mid-week took their toll, with the first two losing 1-2 to
Leganés and 3-0 to Córdoba respectively, and Compostela only
drawing 1-1 at home to an on form Atlético Madrid B. Down at the bottom
of the table, Elche's new manager Jorge D'Alessandro got his first win, 1-2 at
Getafe, with Zárate, the brother of Real Madrid's young striker who is
on loan from Málaga, getting one and making another. Logroñes
appeared to be clear at last from financial ruin as a new owner, Continental
Sports, S.L. took over the club and saved it from liquidation. However, just
when it seemed safe to get back in the water, they ran headlong into a brick
wall by the name of Recreativo de Huelva, who hammered them 0-3. Recreativo,
who are under new ownership themselves, are next to bottom and are still six
points adrift of three teams, Logroñes, Mérida and Elche. However
with direct goal average counting before general, the result could count
against them at the end of the season.
