The league's leading scorer
Salva added to his total for the season, but he had to wait for the
fourth minute of injury time to get it. His spectacular goal saved
Racing de Santandera point, as at that time they were trailing
Espanyol by 1-2. The only change to Gustavo Benítez's
side was the introduction of Ismael for the injured Billabona.
Brindisi included Velamazán in place of Galca, but decided to
play Sergio, recently recovered from injury, for Roger. Espanyol
youngster De Lucas scored the first goal from the penalty spot in the
16th minute after an alleged handball in the penalty area, but
Racing's South American defender Arzeno equalised from a header ten
minutes later. The away side went back into the lead with probably the
best goal of the day twenty minutes from time, Arteaga's long shot
from out on the left side of the field (or was it a cross?) carrying
over the head of Ceballos and into the net off the crossbar. It looked
as if Espanyol were going to get their first victory in Santander in
18 years, but up popped the Pichichi to save the day. Both teams
maintain their places in the top half of the table, although Espanyol
have not won in five matches and need to win soon to push for a UEFA
spot.
There was a similar result at
Atlético de Madrid, but this time it was the away side
Numancia who scored in injury time to level the match at 2-2.
Ranieri kept the same side that steamrollered Amica in midweek, with
Hasselbaink and Correa up front, and Solari and José Mari on
the wings. Baraja accompanied Bejbl in midfield. Numancia were making
their first visit ever to the Vicente Calderón stadium, and
included Ojeda and Rubén Navarro in attack, with Jaume
eventually replacing Barbu in midfield. Atlético lost key
defender Gamarra early on with a leg injury which is likely to keep
him out for a month, Santi coming on to replace him, and also had
lesser injuries to Chamot and José Mari, who were substituted
by Aguilera and Venturín. Baraja opened the scoring in the 26th
minute after Solari laid the ball back, and Hasselbaink scored from a
header, his fifth in four games, just before half time. Atleti
relaxed, but ended up letting Numancia off the hook. Castaño
pulled one back in the second half with a shot which took a deflection
off a defender, and Nagore levelled the scores in the 94th minute
after Rubén Navarro had headed on a corner to the far post.
