UEFA Cup
This Thursday the four Spanish
clubs play the second legs of their ties. Remember what happened in
the first legs:
Aris Salonica 2 - Celta 2 Two
goals in a minute by Russian midfielder Valery Karpin shortly before
half-time silenced the vociferous Greek crowd in the hostile Harilaou
stadium. Karpin's first goal was a beauty, his shot struck from some
30 metres leaving keeper Katergianniakis with no option. A minute
later he headed in Makelele's cross, and Celta appeared to be
cruising. However, Andrioli pulled one back just before half time, and
halfway through the second half Kyzeridis beat Dutruel from the edge
of the area to level the scores. The crowd rallied behind the home
side, but Celta hung on to take a deserved draw back to Gallicia for
the return leg in two weeks time. Tomás was given a rare start
by Víctor Fernandez as Revivo was injured.
Deportivo de La Coruña
3 - Montpellier 1 An easy victory for Depor which could have
been by a far larger margin in the end. Flavio aggravated an old
injury in the pre-match warm up was replaced by Jokanovic in the
starting line up. Pauleta and Makaay started up front, with Djalminha
playing behind them. Montpellier scored the first goal from a
break-away, Delaye's cross-come-shot taking a deflection off Romero in
the sixth minute. Pauleta equalised for Depor ten minutes later,
heading in Víctor's corner, but despite intense pressure from
the home side, the teams went in at the break level. The second half
belonged to Djalminha, who scored two goals in four minutes. His first
goal came from a cheeky penalty four minutes into the second half
after Silvestre had handled in the area. Djalminha checked in his run
up, waited for the Casard to commit himself, and chipped the ball over
the forlorn keeper into the roof of the net. Four minutes later he
added his teams third, placing the ball past Casard on the second
attempt.
Atlético de Madrid 1
- Amica Wronki 0 A poor match which Atleti were thankful to
see the end of. Only 4,000 fans turned up on a cold rainy night in
Madrid, and most of them wished they had stayed at home. Ranieri kept
Molina in goal with Hasselbaink and José mari up front. Both
sides had chances throughout the match, but it was eventually left to
substitute Baraja to settle it. He picked up a ball seven minutes from
time and beat four Polish defenders before shooting strongly past
reserve keeper Michniewicz (substituting Strozynski who was injured in
the second half). The best thing of the night for Atlético was
the result, and keeping a clean sheet could be important for the
return match in Poland. Teplice 1 Mallorca 2 Mallorca returned to the
Czech Republic for the second tie in a row to face a side which on
paper was stronger than Sigma Olomouc, their opponents in the first
round. Vázquez included Argentinians Serrizuela and Quinteros
in his starting line up, and kept Diego Tristán up front again
with Carlos still out. The young Sevillian striker was the star of the
match, scoring twice in a four minute period in the first half to give
his side a comfortable away victory. His first goal came from a header
after a pass from Lauren, and his second was an individual effort
which he finished with a low shot, and he came close to completing his
hat-trick on the hour when another header hit the crossbar. Teplice
came back shortly afterwards, Kolomaznik beating Burgos with a header
after the ball had rebounded off the post. Verbir hit the post for the
home side in the last minute, but Mallorca stuck to their guns to
leave them in a good position to go through to the last 32.
