Mallorca also climbed
out of the bottom group with a 2-1 victory against struggling Málaga,
leaving the Andalucian side at the foot of the table. Both teams
changed their goalkeepers for this match, with Mallorca bringing in
Leo Franco for the suspended Burgos, and Málaga manager Peiró
leaving out Contreras and giving a start to Rafa. Vázquez had
Engonga back from injury in the home side, and Quinteros and Tristán
kept their places in attack, with Biagini finally back from a long
injury on the bench. Mallorca raced into a two goal lead with two
similar goals, both coming from Stankovic free kicks. The first from
the right was headed on by Lauren past Rafa in the 18th minute, and
Quinteros got the second six minutes later, this time from the left
hand side. Peiró took off Iznata and Rufete at half time and
put on Ruano and striker Darío Silva, and five minutes into the
half they pulled a goal back, De los Santos sending a looping header
over the goalkeeper from a corner. Leo Franco was outstanding in the
Mallorca goal and kept out Catanha and company as they pressed forward
for the equaliser. In the end the home fans were calling for the final
whistle, and Vázquez can take a small breather. Peiró is
rumoured to be on his way out, a sure sign of which is that president
Puche confirmed him in his position, a kiss of death in Spanish
football!
Both Luis Aragonés and
Andoni Goekoetxea needed a victory for their teams Oviedo and
Numancia, and in the end it was Aragonés who won by the
narrowest of margins by a single goal. Both teams came in to the match
with good draws against Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively, but
with both perilously close to the bottom of the table. Aragonés
kept the same block of players who got the point in the Bernabeu last
week, and Goekoetxea brought in Jaume, Castaño and Rubén
to his starting eleven, leaving out of form Gabi Popescu at home.
Numancia should have taken the lead shortly before half time when
Boris brought down Ojeda in the penalty area, but Esteban saved
Ojeda's poorly hit penalty kick and then prevented the giant striker
from scoring on the follow up. In the end it was Losada once again who
wrapped up the points for Oviedo, scoring from Dubovsky's pass on the
hour mark. Numancia brought on a new forward line, Morales and Barbu
entering for Rubén Navarro and Ojeda, but they were unable to
break down the Oviedo defence. Oviedo climb away from the danger zone,
but Numancia slip into the third automatic relegation spot in 18th
place, only a point above the two bottom clubs, Sevilla and Málaga.
All three bottom clubs were newly promoted this season, and all three
appear to have a long and hard season ahead of them. |
