Deportivo de La Coruña
surprised Athletic Bilbao in a rainy San Mames stadium,
beating the home side 2-3. Athletic manager Luis Fernández,
once again watching the match from the stand after another sending
off, brought back Julen Guerrero after a one match suspension, and
included Lacruz and Roberto Rios at the back, leaving out Oskar Vales.
Jabo Irureta had to leave out Makaay and Djalminha, both injured, but
had Flavio Conceiçao back in the starting line up after coming
on as substitute midweek. In a match similar to the Real Madrid
Valencia game, the away side moved in to a 0-3 lead before the home
team pulled back two goals. Depor were in the lead in the 12th minute
when Víctor caught Bilbao half asleep with a quick free kick.
The Bilbao defence stopped as Pauleta rose to head the ball in off the
crossbar. Shortly before half time Flavio scored his second goal in
three days, Roberto Rios misdirecting a clearance straight at the
Brazilian midfielder who picked up the rebound, ran past the defender
and shot past Imanol Etxeberria. Urzaiz came on at half time for
Bilbao, but Coruña scored again shortly before the hour, Víctor
once again catching the defence napping to run past the defence to put
the ball in the net. Bilbao finally awoke five minutes later when
Songo'o failed to hold on to a Julen Guerrero free kick which bounced
awkwardly in front of him and José Mari followed up. Two
minutes later a clever back-heel by Urzaiz set up Ezquerro for their
second goal, but Depor hung on for the three points, taking them up to
sixth in the table, equal with Zaragoza on 11 points. Athletic drop to
17th, only one point ahead of the bottom three.
Alavés met Sevilla
in a match which the home side manager Mané qualified as a game
between relegation candidates. This did not go down well in Andalucia,
where the proud Sevillians believed that they were above this, and the
sports press was full of declarations from both sides all week. In the
end they ended up sharing the points in a 0-0 draw, leaving Alavés
sitting comfortably in 7th place with ten points, but Sevilla in one
of the three relegation spots on four points. Mané was forced
to leave out Meho Kodro once again as the Bosnian striker had not
fully recovered from an injury, and Magno and Javi Moreno continued up
front, with on form midfielder Astudillo playing behind them. Sevilla
manager Marcos Alonso brought in Uruguayan striker Marcelo Otero for
only his second start of the season after picking up an injury. In the
end it was the defences who won out, although both sides had scoring
chances with Javi Moreno hitting the bar for Alavés and Tabaré
having a headed goal disallowed for a previous foul. Julio Salinas
also went close with a header for Alavés after coming on again
as substitute. Sevilla go in to the derby match with Betis in 10 days
time hoping to record their first win of the season. |
