UEFA Cup
The second leg of the UEFA cup
matches will be played midweek. Atlético de Madrid and Mallorca
are virtually qualified for the next round, but Deportivo de la Coruña
and Celta still have work to do at home. Remember the results from the
first leg:
Stabaek (Norway) 1 -
Deportivo 0 Played on Tuesday night to accommodate Real Madrid
who play Depor on Saturday, the Gallician side were surprised by a
stronger than expected Norwegian team. The only goal was scored by
Finstad when Songo'o failed to hold on to his strong shot. Deportivo
are used to this situation; in four European ties they have always
lost the first leg, and in three of the four they have recovered at
home in the second leg.
Atlético de Madrid 3
- Ankaragucu (Turkey) 0 Atleti recorded their first win of the
season against a week Turkish side. With two international goalkeepers
in his side, Ranieri decided to play Toni in the league and Molina in
the cup competitions. Gamarra and Hasselbaink both scored their first
official goals for their club in a three minute period just before
half time, the first a header from Capdevila's cross, and the second a
shot after a pass from Aguilera. The tie was effectively over in the
57th minute when Paunovic added the third after good work from
Hasselbaink.
Lausanne (Switzerland) 3 -
Celta 2 After an hour of play Celta were to all effects and
purposes out of the UEFA cup with a 3-0 scoreline against them,
Lausanne scoring through Kuzba and Mazzoni (2). However Revivo put
Celta back in with a chance with two moments of magic in five minutes.
At first he somehow reached a ball which seemed to be going out to
flick it past the keeper from an impossible angle, and he then
produced a pass to McCarthy which left the defence with no option but
to bring the South African forward down for a penalty. Karpin scored
from the spot kick.
Sigma Olomouc (Czech Rep) 1
- Mallorca 3 New manager Fernando Vázquez made his
debut in Europe with a good victory against the Czech side. The first
goal came in the twelfth minute when Engonga followed up on
Stankovic's corner. Diego Tristán scored the second in the
second half from a cross from veteran full back Miguel Soler. Olomouc
pulled one back through Kobylik, but Mallorca re-established the two
goal margin thirteen minutes from time with a direct free kick from
Stankovic. Mallorca's eccentric goalkeeper 'Mono' Burgos entertained
the crowd with his antics. |
