Another pair of brothers were
also sitting on opposite sides of the substitutes bench. Alfonso Pérez
plays for Betis and his brother Iván has just signed
for Deportivo de La Coruña. Neither were able to make
much impact however in a match which ended goal-less, but the game was
not without incident. Denilson won a penalty when he was brought down
by keeper Songo'o after the Brazilian star had jinked past three
defenders. However Songo'o guessed correctly and saved Finidi's spot
kick. Betis keeper Prats was also called upon to save from a Djalminha
free kick late in the game. Betis lined up with Bornes replacing the
suspended Alexis, and Deportivo could still find no place for Turu
Flores, with Makaay and Pauleta in attack once again.
The best result of the day was
recorded by Zaragoza, who beat Oviedo 4-0, with Savo
Milosevic and Marcos Vales on fine form. Jamelli headed the first from
Milosevic's centre as early as the eighth minute, but the game got
bogged down and the home fans started to whistle against their own
side and against their president, who they feel has not strengthened
the squad sufficiently. Zaragoza's response was to score twice in 3
minutes on the hour, firstly form Vellisca, who picked up a clever
back-heel from Yordi, and then from Marcos Vales. Milosevic added the
last goal from Marcos Vales's pass in injury time.
Celta de Vigo were
without Sergio, injured, and gave Adriano a chance in defence against
Sevilla, who had all six Uruguayans available for the first
time. Benni McCarthy scored his first goal in the Spanish league,
turning in a cross from Gustavo López halfway through the first
half. Tsartas equalised fifteen minutes from time with his second goal
from a free kick in two weeks, but Celta came back almost immediately
with a goal from Makele after a pass from ex Sevilla defender Velasco.
Adriano was carried off before half time and had to be replaced by
Celades. |
