Spain are out of the Confederations Cup! A surprise defeat against USA left them without the much-expected final with Brazil, and ended an unbeaten run that stretched back to 34 games and over two and a half years.

Despite dominating early on, Del Bosque's side fell behind on the half mark when Villarreal's Jozy Altidore picked up Dempsey's pass and fired in a shot which Casillas could only turn in to the net off the post.

Villa went close a couple of times either side of half time, but the American defence held fast, and with a quarter of an hour to go Piqué and Sergio Ramos were both unable to clear Donovan's cross and Dempsey turned the ball in to an empty net.

Villa and Xabi Alonso both tested Howard as Spain frantically tried to get back in the game, but even when Bradley was sent off for a hard tackle on Alonso near the end they were unable to score. The run of fifteen wins in a row had ended, and all that is left for them is a disappointing third place play-off on Sunday.
