Spain’s participation in this season’s Champions League is over after Atlético Madrid and Barcelona were both beaten by German opposition at the quarter final stage, and for the first time in 13 years there will be no La Liga team in the final four! On Thursday, Atlético lost 2-1 to Leipzig, who reach the semi-final stage for the first time in their history. Spain’s Dani Olmo headed the opener for Leipzig from Sabitzer’s cross early on in the second half. And although substitute Joao Felix made it all square from the penalty spot after he was brought down by Klostermann, Savic deflected a shot by Adams past his own keeper with two minutes to go. The following day Barcelona suffered their worst defeat in Champions League history after losing 2-8 to Bayern Munich! With only four minutes gone they were already behind when Lewandowski set up Müller to beat Ter Stegen, and although Alaba put through his own net from Jordi Alba’s cross just three minutes later, strikes by Perisic, Gnabry and Múller virtually wrapped things up before the break. Luis Suárez fired one back midway through the second half, but Kimmich and Lewandowski added two more and, to add insult to injury, the on-loan Coutinho came on to score twice against his former club in the last five minutes.
