Real Madrid are back at the top of the table after a 2-0 victory over Barcelona in the latest “clásico” on Sunday evening! After their surprise defeat in the Champions League midweek, this was one they needed to win to restore confidence and stay on track with their arch-rivals, and after both sides failed to convert chances, Vinicius put Zidane’s team ahead with a shot which deflected in off Pique. And with the game coming to an end substitute Mariano, who had only come on a minute earlier, ran on to a long throw-in to score the second. Madrid move a point above the Catalans, with the head-to-head goal difference now in their favour.
The two leaders have opened up a big gap over the teams below them though, Sevilla now nine points below them in third after a later 3-2 win over Osasuna. First half strikes by En-Nesyri and Ocampos were overturned by an Aridane header and a Roberto Torres penalty, even though the visitors were playing with ten men, but En-Nesyri got the winner in time added on. Getafe are just a point behind the Andalusians however after a 0-1 victory at Mallorca, Maksimovic getting the only goal there, and Atlético Madrid drop to fifth after a 1-1 draw at Espanyol, Savic turning a Wu Lei cross into his own net before Saúl levelled the scores. Villarreal meanwhile are now eighth after a 1-0 defeat at Athletic Bilbao, Raúl García converting a controversial penalty after Pau Torres was adjudged to have handled in the area to give the Basques their first league win in eleven games, just four days before their cup semi-final against Granada. (01.03.20)Valencia moved back to within a point of the European spots after a 2-1 win over Betis on Saturday afternoon. Gameiro fired the Ches into the lead a quarter of an hour into the second half, and Parejo added a second before Loren got a late consolation for the visitors in injury time. Granada though are now four points behind Valencia after they could only draw 0-0 with Celta, who are now three points above the relegation places as a result. Eibar also moved away from the danger zone after they beat Levante 3-0 in the early kick-off, Charles scoring twice and having a penalty saved by Aitor before Orellana wrapped things up. Leganés however stay in the bottom three after they drew 1-1 against Alavés, Carrillo at least saving a point for them after Lucas Pérez had put the visitors in front. (29.02.20)
