Real Madrid stay three points clear at the top of the table after they won 1-4 at Osasuna on Sunday afternoon, Unai García putting the hosts in front early on, but Isco and Sergio Ramos turning the scoreline around before the break, and Lucas Vázquez and Jovic adding two more in the last ten minutes or so. Barcelona kept in touch with the leaders though after they beat Betis 2-3 in the last game of the evening. A Canales penalty after Lenglet handled in the area, and a strike by Fekir twice gave the locals the lead, but De Jong and Busquets pegged them back both times before the break, the two goals from Messi assists. With twenty minutes to go however Lenglet headed in a Messi free kick, and although Fekir and Lenglet were sent off later on, the scoreline didn’t change. Madrid and Barça were of course knocked out of the cup midweek by Basque sides Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao, who by chance met this Sunday in San Sebastian. With the semi-finals looming midweek, both coaches understandably put out weakened line-ups, but (after the big boys came on), the locals won it 2-1, Isak getting the winner after Portu’s second half strike was cancelled out by Williams. Earlier in the day bottom club Espanyol beat fellow strugglers Mallorca 1-0 to move level with the islanders in the table, De Tomás heading the winner on the hour mark to give the Catalans their first home win of the season. They stay at the foot of the table however after Celta won 2-1 against fifth placed Sevilla, late strikes by Iago Aspas and Sisto giving the Galicians three vital points after En-Nesyri had opened the scoring for the Andalusians. Getafe are having their best season ever, and they are now in a heady third spot after a 3-0 victory over Valencia on Saturday afternoon! A win would have taken the Ches above their hosts, but Jorge Molina netted twice at the start of the second half, and after new signing Fiorenzi was sent off, Mata wrapped things up near the end. Atlético Madrid stay three points behind Pepe Bordalas’s side, now back in fourth place, after they beat Granada 1-0 later in the evening, Koke setting up Correa for the opener, but Oblak having to make a couple of key saves after that to prevent the Andalusians from coming away with a point. Villarreal though missed out on a chance to move up into the European spots after they could only draw 1-1 at Valladolid, Alcaraz volleying the locals in front on the quarter hour mark, but Gerard Moreno levelling it after VAR overturned the referee’s decision to disallow his second half strike. Further down the table Leganés stay in the bottom three after they lost 2-0 at Levante, Rochina and Roger getting the goals midway through the first half to take their team up to eleventh. And on Friday Alavés won 2-1 against Eibar to move clear of the danger zone, Lucas Pérez and Burke putting the locals two up before Orellana got one back late on. (08.02.20)
