A brilliant result for Atlético Madrid on Wednesday, a 2-0 victory over Juventus virtually ensuring their place in the quarter finals. Oblak kept out an early free kick from Cristiano Ronaldo, but the locals were unlucky not to go ahead after that, Griezmann lobbing a shot against the bar, and the VAR system overturning a penalty decision (awarding a free kick outside of the area), and ruling out a goal by Morata for a previous foul. With twelve minutes to go though Giménez opened the scoring following a corner, and five minutes later his fellow central defender and countryman Godín made it two after a wide free kick fell to him close to goal. Barcelona were in action on Tuesday, a 0-0 draw at Olympique Lyon giving them the edge for the second leg. Ter Stegen had to push an early shot from Terrier on to the bar, but otherwise the Liga side were on top. However, despite some 25 shots at goal, they were not able to find a way past Lopes and his defence, the local keeper in particular making saves from Dembélé, Busquets and Messi, and Luis Suárez (who has not scored away from home in Europe for over three years) wasting a couple of good chances. All will now be resolved in the Nou Camp next month. (19.02.19)
