First division – day 14

It seems Athletic Bilbao’s midweek cup victory was just a brief respite, and they remain in the relegation zone after a 3-0 defeat at Levante in the Monday night game. Chema put the locals ahead of the stroke of half time, and Campaña and Roger added two more after the restart to take the Valencia based side up to sixth. Athletic have now gone thirteen league games without a win however, and coach Toto Berizzo was fired shortly after the match ended. (03.12.18)

Barcelona are back at the top of the table after a 2-0 victory over Villarreal on Sunday evening! Piqué headed the opener from Dembélé’s cross shortly before the break, but the result was in doubt until Messi put Aleñá through to make it two with three minutes to go. The Catalans move back above Sevilla, who were held to a 1-1 draw by fourth placed Alavés later in the evening. Calleri set up Jony to give the locals a half-time lead, but Ben Yedder got on the end of Sarabia’s cross to save a point later on. Atlético Madrid stay in third spot after they too drew 1-1 at Girona, Stuani putting the Catalans in front from the penalty spot on the stroke of half time, and Ramalho poking the ball into his own net under pressure from Diego Costa with eight minutes to go. Girona are now exactly level with Espanyol in joint sixth place. Betis meanwhile are just two points off the European spots after they beat Real Sociedad 1-0 in the mid-day kick-off, Junior getting the only goal from Joaquín’s centre near the end of the first half, and Pau López making a string of saves after that to take the Andalusians level with their opponents in the table. It is still too early to write Real Madrid off for the league title this year, and they are now only three points below the leaders pending Sunday’s games after a 2-0 victory over Valencia on Saturday evening. Solari’s side took the lead in the eighth minute when Daniel Wass headed a Carvajal cross into his own net, but Courtois had several saves to make before Lucas Vázquez put the result beyond doubt with seven minutes to go. Madrid move up to fifth, ahead of Espanyol, who were beaten 3-0 by Getafe earlier in the evening. All the goals came after the break, Jorge Molina, Mata and Antunes finding the net to take their team to within a point of their opponents in the table. Further down the rankings Celta moved away from the danger area after a 2-0 win over bottom club Huesca. Iago Aspas scored a goal in each half to give new coach Miguel Cardoso a first win. Only two points separate seven sides though, Leganés also distancing themselves from the relegation zone after a 2-4 victory at Valladolid. Siovas and Oscar put the visitors two up at the break, and although Toni Villa got one back, two more from Carrillo wrapped things up before Enes Ünal scored again for the hosts. (01.12.18)

Rayo Vallecano finally got their first home win of the season after they beat Eibar 1-0 in the Friday night game. Embarba got the only goal from Alex Moreno’s cross early on in the second half to take the Madrid based side to within three points of escaping the drop zone pending the rest of the weekend fixtures.
