Celta missed out on a chance to move up to fourth place after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Getafe on Monday night, and they end the weekend down in eighth spot. Maxi Gómez headed the locals in front before the break, but Mata came on to get the equaliser with twelve minutes to go. Getafe themselves are now ninth. (01.10.18)
Only three points separate the top seven teams after leaders Barcelona and Real Madrid both dropped five points in their last two games this week. Betis are now up to fifth after they beat Leganés 1-0 on Thursday, although they had to wait for the last minute before substitute Loren finally made the breakthrough against an ultra-defensive side. Alavés drop to sixth after they lost 2-1 at Levante, first half strikes by Jason and Toño overturning Rubén Sobrino’s fifth minute opener, and Villarreal lose ground on the teams above them after they were beaten 0-1 by Valladolid, Leo Suárez getting the only goal against the club who loaned him out this season, and Masip saving a Gerard Moreno penalty after Kiko Olivas handled in the area near the end. Leganés are back in bottom spot after Huesca drew 1-1 against Girona earlier in the evening, Stuani and Melero getting the goals from the penalty spot after the VAR system overturned the referee’s original decision that both fouls had taken place outside of the area. A bad week for Barcelona this week, a 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday afternoon meaning they have only taken two points from their three league matches. It could have been worse though, De Marcos putting the visitors ahead before the break, and although Coutinho and Messi (who started the game on the bench) hit the woodwork after the restart, it was not until five minutes from the end that substitute Munir got the equaliser. Barça stay top on goal difference however after Real Madrid were also held to a 0-0 draw by city rivals Atlético Madrid later in the evening. Despite the result there were several chances, and only a string of saves from keepers Courtois and Oblak kept the scoreline unmoved. Sevilla took advantage to move to within a point of the two leaders after they beat Eibar 1-3 in the Ipurúa stadium. André Silva got the opener soon after the restart, and Banega made it two from the penalty spot, the game halted for ten minutes or so after a barrier in the stand collapsed as the Sevilla fans celebrated (luckily no-one was seriously hurt). Banega got a third in time added on, and Jordán got a last minute consolation for the hosts. Meanwhile Valencia finally got their first win of the season after a 0-1 victory at Real Sociedad in the early kick off, Gameiro getting the only goal before the interval, and Neto saving a second half penalty from Willian José to ensure the three points. A 2-2 draw between Rayo Vallecano and Espanyol in this week’s Friday night game, the result leaving the Catalans in fifth place and taking the locals out of the relegation zone pending the rest of the weekend matches. A strike by Raúl De Tomás was overturned by goals from Borja Iglesias and Granero before the break, but Kakuta levelled it again from the penalty spot just two minute in to the second half. (28.09.18)
