Latest transfers

Two weeks on from our last report, and it is already clear that this is going to be a summer which smashes all previous records. Morata has left Real Madrid to go to Chelsea for €80 million, the highest price ever paid for a Spanish player, and even the out of favour Danilo has brought in another €35 million or so to Madrid’s treasury from Manchester City. Vitolo’s move to Atlético via Las Palmas mentioned in our last report has injected €37 million in to Sevilla’s coffers, Villarreal have forked out €11 million to bring Pablo Fornals back home, and even Eibar have made a club record signing, paying Sporting Lisbon €4 million for defender Paulo Oliveira!.

All of that is due to pale into insignificance though in the next few days if the rumours are to be believed, with Madrid close to agreeing an incredible €180 million fee for Mónaco’s 18 year old forward Mbappé, and Paris Saint Germain even topping that to pay Neymar’s buy-out clause of €220 million.

That would certainly trigger a massive bun-fight, and there is already talk of what could happen next, with Barça even suggesting they could compete for Mbappé, or otherwise spend €100 million or so on players such as Griezmann, Dybala, Coutinho, Verratti or Paulinho, and the likes of Manchester United looking to sign Gareth Bale or others for a similar amount. Financial fair-play may have some say in all of that, and clubs will have to balance their books one way or another, but with Europe’s big spenders gearing up, it looks like we’re in for a lot of fun this year!
