Second placed Girona got their promotion race back on track after a 0-2 victory at Numancia on Sunday evening. Pablo Machin’s side had lost their last three games, but two second half goals by Alcalá, the first from a direct free kick and the second on a rapid counter-attack in injury time, took the Catalans seven points clear of third placed Tenerife. Oviedo stay in fifth spot, just a point below Tenerife, after they beat UCAM Murcia 2-0. Toché got the opener for the Asturians in the second minute, but they had to wait for time added on before Borja Domínguez combined with Michu to make sure of the victory. The Aragón based team have opened up a four point gap over eighth place, currently occupied by Valladolid after they beat Córdoba 2-1 in the mid-day kick-off. Elche move up safely to mid-table after a 3-2 victory over Sevilla Atlético, the result taking Toril’s side to within a point of their opponents in the table. Nino’s early opener was cancelled out by a Marc Gual strike, but second half goals from Alex Fernández and Borja Valle put the game beyond the visitors’ reach before Gual netted again late on. Elche are now two points above Zaragoza, who threw away a two goal lead in a 2-2 draw at Almería. Edu Bedía and Angel scored twice for the Maños in the opening six minutes, but a Morcillo strike and a Quique González header levelled the scores before the interval, and the locals pulled back to save a point after Fidel was sent off with twenty minutes to go. Zaragoza are now twelfth, albeit just four points clear of the Andalusians, who stay in the drop zone for another week. (09.04.17)

Earlier in the afternoon Mallorca and Nàstic drew 0-0, a result which leaves Sergi Barjuán’s new side joint bottom with Mirandés, and takes the Catalans a point above the relegation zone, for the next 24 hours at least.
