No real problems for Atlético Madrid, a 0-0 draw at home to Bayer Leverkusen taking them through comfortably to the quarter finals for the fourth year in a row. The 2-4 result from the first leg meant that the German side had to win by a margin of three in the Calderón stadium, but with Oblak on great form that was never going to happen. The Slovenian keeper made important saves from Brandt, Volland and others, whilst his opposite number Leno also kept out Correa and Koke before the break. Job done, and Atleti now have to concentrate on the weekend match against Sevilla. (15.03.17)
Sevilla are out of the Champions League after they lost 2-0 at Leicester on Tuesday evening! Wes Morgan gave the Premier League side the lead somewhat against the run of play when he turned the ball in with his thigh following a Mahrez free kick with just under half an hour gone. Soon after the restart Escudero curled a shot against the bar, but just a minute later Albrighton made it two with a low shot past Sergio Rico after Rami could only head a Mahrez centre in to his path. A few minutes later Nasri was sent off for a second yellow card after clashing with Vardy, but the Andalusians had a chance to level the tie when Schmeichel brought down Vitolo in the area with ten minutes to go. However for the second two in two games the keeper saved the Andalusians’ spot kick, this time from N’Zonzi, and Vardy and Slimani could have extended the lead for the locals near the end. (14.03.17)
