Spain’s under 21 side are through to next summer’s European finals after knocking out Austria on the away goal rule! After the 1-1 draw in the first leg, Albert Celadés’ side were favourites to qualify. However they struggled to find the route to goal, and could have gone behind before the break had Wydra not fired a free kick against the defensive wall, and had Schoissengeyer not headed just wide following a corner. Spain did feel they should have had a penalty though when Mwene handled in the area, and after the restart only a good save by Bachmann prevented Deulofeu from opening the scoring. Kepa had to save as well from Sallahi, but with twelve minutes to go the visitors were left with ten men when Schöpf picked up a second booking, and only a couple of first class stops by Bachmann prevented Deulofeu and Borja Mayoral from wrapping things up late on.
