Spain’s under 21 side could only draw 1-1 with Sweden on Monday evening, and with two games to go they stay in third spot in their group. Honours were shared in the first half, Merino and Munir bringing saves out of Erlandsson, and Une Larsson and Olsson heading free kicks over the top for the locals. However some five minutes in to the second half Deulofeu ran on to a Bellerín through ball to put Albert Celades’ side in front, and Denis Suárez, Oliver Torres and Merino all failed to covert chances in the following minutes. With six minutes to go though Pau López gave away a penalty on Asoro, and although Olsson fired his spot kick against the bar, the Scandinavians equalized a minute or so later when Saúl Ñíguez sliced Olsson’s corner past his own keeper. All is not lost however, and with Sweden and Croatia yet to play each other, victories against San Marino and Estonia would probably ensure Spain a place in the play-offs as one of the four best runners up.
