Summer transfers

Three weeks in, and the transfer market is in full swing. The financial fair-play rules are preventing teams from spending beyond their means, but there have already been some big moves, with Barcelona in particular forking out €35 million on Valencia’s André Gomes (plus up to €35 million more in variables!), and also taking on Umtiti and Digne. They still need another striker though (albeit that he will spend most of his time on the bench!), and probably have to offload a couple of players, particularly in an over-populated midfield. Meanwhile Real Madrid and Atlético’s appeals against their FIFA transfer bans are due to be resolved very soon, and all indications are that the claims will be rejected. If that happens however the bans are only likely to come into force for the winter 2016 / summer 2017 windows, so they should be able to sign players up to the end of August.

Atlético have done most of their work anyway, as mentioned in our last report, and they only need a top class striker. Diego Costa would be their favourite, although Chelsea are unlikely to release him, and names such as Higuain, Gameiro or Cavani are being mooted. Real Madrid however have still not added further to their squad, and if the likes of Morata, Varane, James and Isco stay, they may not invest any further (unless Pogba is too much of a temptation for club president Florentino Pérez?!?). Elsewhere the other two Champions League teams have been active, Villarreal bringing Spaniards Andrés and José Angel in from Porto, and Sevilla as ever making some shrewd signings, the latest being Joaquín Correa, Franco Vázquez and Ganso. Valencia however (who are not in Europe this season) are offloading players, with Negredo, Barragán and Piatti moving on, although they have brought in Portugal’s Nani and Real Madrid B’s Alvaro Medrán to replace them.
