Summer transfers

The transfer window is open again, and clubs have until the end of August to complete their squads for the new season. As ever though, the first job is to get the coaching staff on board, and eight of last season’s top flight teams have opted for a change. Sevilla and Málaga had little choice as Unai Emery and Javi Gracia were poached by Paris Saint Germain and Rubin Kazan respectively, and Jorge Sampaoli and Juande Ramos will be their replacements. New owners at Espanyol and Granada have drafted in Quique Sánchez Flores and Paco Jémez from Watford and Rayo Vallecano, and Rayo themselves have brought back Sandoval to try and get them back up. Elsewhere Betis and Deportivo have signed up Gustavo Poyet and Gaizka Garitano, and Levante have sacked Rubi and taken on Alcorcón’s López Muñiz. Of the newly promoted sides, only Alavés have made a change after they failed to agree terms with Bordalás, Ex Valencia coach Mauricio Pellegrino the new man at Vitoria.

Meanwhile Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid are still waiting for the results of their appeals against FIFA’s transfer bans, although they will be allowed to sign players this summer pending the final outcome. Many issues are on hold until the Euro 2016 finals come to an end, but so far Real’s only move is to exercise the buy-back clause for Morata (it remains to be seen whether he is sold on or not), and Atlético have tied up Benfica’s Gaitán and Croatian full back Vrsaljko, and extended the contract of Fernando Torres for another year. Barcelona’s suspension was of course lifted last winter, and they will be buying French international defender Umtiti from Olympique Lyon, and bringing back Denis Suárez from Villarreal. Marc Bartra and Dani Alves have moved on though to Borussia Dortmund and Juventus, and Sandro has several suitors after being released.

Otherwise the early movers are principally from Andalusia, with Betis signing up Durmisi, Jonas Martin, Nahuel, Felipe Gutiérrez and Mandi, and renewing the loan deal for Chelsea’s Musonda. Málaga have taken on Keko, Jony, Koné and Kuzmanovic, and Sevilla have brought in Sarabia and Kiyotake to replace Banega and Reyes, who will be moving on to Espanyol. The Catalans have also purchased Olympiakos keeper Roberto, and Real Sociedad have signed Southampton striker Juanmi. Real Madrid’s Cheryshev will be returning to Villarreal after loans at Sevilla and Valencia, and Deportivo and Eibar have already been active as well. As usual though the Premier League will be depriving us of some of our star players, with Manchester City paying the buy-out clause for Celta’s Noltio, Manchester United forking out big money for Villarreal’s Eric Bailly, and West Ham taking on Feghouli, who was out of contract at Valencia.
