Spain are out of the European Championships, Del Bosque’s side beaten 2-0 by Italy in the first knock-out round! Only two great early saves from De Gea prevented Pellè and Giaccherini from scoring early on, and with just over half an hour gone the Azzurri took the lead, Chiellini getting the final touch after the Manchester United keeper had saved Eder’s free kick and Giaccherini’s follow up. Buffon only had to keep out a long effort from Iniesta before that, and De Gea was called upon again to stop another shot from Giaccherini shortly before the break. Morata, Fàbregas and half time substitute Aduríz went close after the restart, but De Gea was in action again to save from Eder when he got free on goal. Buffon made important stops from Iniesta and Piqué as Spain threw everything forward, but with the game in injury time Pellè wrapped things up after Darmian’s cross deflected to him off Sergio Ramos. Spain’s eight year reign as European champions was over, and Del Bosque is now expected to announce his retirement in the coming days. (27.06.16)
