Osasuna will take the third promotion spot after beating Girona 3-1 on aggregate in the play-off final! The 2-1 result from the first leg in Pamplona had left the tie in the balance, but the locals had already overturned a similar result against Córdoba in the semi-finals, and they had the better chances early on, with Nauzet in particular having to save a header from Rubén Sobrino. Oier brought a great stop out of Nauzet at the other end however, and just three minutes after the restart Kodro ran on to a Roberto Torres through ball to add to the lead. Lekic had a strike ruled out for offside and Lejeune headed against the upright as the home side looked to get back in the match, but with two minutes to go the Catalans were left with ten men when a frustrated Lejeune was sent off for punching Nauzet on the back of the head as he held on to the ball. A first defeat at home in 2016 for Girona and another disappointment after just missing out on promotion last season, but Osasuna are back in the top flight after a two year absence. Last season Monreal’s side only just escaped the drop on the last day, and as fate would have it they only scraped in to the play-offs this year thanks to Girona’s late goal at Ponferradina. That’s football though! (18.06.16)
