Sevilla won the Europa League for the third year in a row and the fifth time in eleven years after they came from behind to beat Liverpool 1-3 in Basel! The Premier League side started strongly though, David Soria having to save from Can and Sturridge, and Carriço lucky to be let off a possible penalty for hand ball. Gameiro did fire an overhead kick just wide, but with ten minutes to go to the break Sturridge opened the scoring, curling a shot past Soria with the outside of his foot after picking up a pass from Coutinho. The Andalusians were happy to go in at the break just one behind as Klopp urged his men on, but less than a minute after the restart Sevilla were level, Mariano ghosting past ex Sevilla left back Moreno before crossing in for Gameiro to score his eighth of the competition. Gameiro had a couple of efforts blocked soon afterwards, and some twenty minutes in to the second half Coke fired home a second after good work between Banega and Vitolo. Six minutes later the team captain was on hand again to pick up a ball which deflected off Coutinho to make it three, and the cup was Sevilla’s. There was no time for Emery’s team to celebrate though as they meet Barcelona in the Spanish cup final on Sunday evening. (18.05.16)
