A close call, but holders Real Madrid are through to the quarter finals of the Champions League despite losing 3-4 to Schalke ’04 in their second leg match. The German side were two down from the first leg, but Choupo-Moting and Meyer went close early on, and in the twentieth minute they took the lead when Casillas could only deflect a fierce shot from Fuchs in to his own net. Ronaldo headed the equalizer from a Kroos corner five minutes later, but ex Madrid striker Huntelaar rattled the crossbar before restoring the lead after Casillas could only push out a shot from Meyer. Once again though Ronaldo levelled the scores with a header from Coentrao’s centre, and it appeared to be all over when Benzema battled through to score a third at the start of the second half. However just four minutes later substitute Sané beat Casillas for a third time with a long shot, and although Wellenreuther had to save from Arbeloa, Kroos and Bale, Huntelaar put the visitors back in front with six minutes to go. Another away goal would have taken Schalke through, and Casillas had to make late saves from Sané and Howedes as Di Mateo threw everyone forward. In the end Ancelotti’s side held on, but after a draw and two defeats in their last three games, there were boos and whistles from the home crowd as the players left the pitch. . (10.03.15)
