Europa League group stage, day 3

Spain’s two remaining representatives in the Europa League lead their respective groups at the end of week three. Villarreal clocked up a comfortable 4-1 victory over Zurich, Cani opening the scoring in the sixth minute of the game after Gerard set him up. Schönbächer made it all square before the break, but Vietto, Bruno and Giovani made sure of the result in the second half. Earlier in the evening defending champions Sevilla drew 0-0 at Standard Liège, and although the Andalusians only have five points to date, results elsewhere mean that they are still leading the pack. Villarreal 4 - Zurich 0

Villarreal clocked up a comfortable 4-1 victory over Zurich in their third group game, a result which keeps them at the top of their mini-league after a ninth home win in a row in the competition. Cani finished off a good team move involving Jonathan, Vietto, Espinosa and Gerard Moreno to open the scoring in the sixth minute of the game, but with the first half coming to a close Schönbächer made it all square after connecting with a wayward Chikhaoui shot to turn the ball past Juan Carlos. Vietto restored the lead after the interval however after Moreno and Espinosa combined to set him up, and just three minutes later Bruno made it three with a well-struck free kick. The Swiss side had little response, and their keeper Da Costa had to save from Moreno before Giovani beat him for a fourth time after running through to fire a shot inside the near post.

Standard Liège 0 - Sevilla 0

Defending champions Sevilla stay at the top of their mini-league after a 0-0 at Standard Liège. It was not one of their best performances though, and only the fact that Rijeka beat Feyenoord in the other group game kept them in first place. Neither side created any real chance before the break, the best effort a header from Gameiro which Thuram collected easily. After the restart Beto had to tip a long cross from Van Damme over the bar, and then save a header from Faty, but Gameiro fired a deflected shot against the upright, and an over-nervous Bacca came on for the French striker to waste a couple of good chances later on. In the end however the Andalusians were thankful for the point after ex Valencia forward Vinicius turned a shot just wide of the post when free on goal in injury time.
