Match round-up - Second Division A, Day 5

An incredible scoreline in the Sunday mid-day match, no less than ten goals scored as Osasuna beat Mallorca 6-4. Asensio put the visitors ahead midway through the first half with a well struck free kick, and although De las Cuevas equalized shortly before half time after Nino headed on Merino’s centre, Scepovic struck twice early on in the second half against a shaky defence to give the islanders a two goal cushion. Raoul Loe got on the end of Roberto Torres corner to get one back though, and with an hour on the clock Torres himself levelled it once again after good work by Nino. The introduction of Cedrick swung it for the locals though, the ex Atlético and Betis winger setting up Nino and Torres for two more in the next twenty minutes, and Javier flaño fired home sixth before Abdón scored again for Karpin’s side. The result takes the locals back up in to the top half of the table, but leaves Mallorca down in bottom spot with only one point in five games. With the club embroiled in boardroom battles at the moment, their future looks grim.

Valladolid moved up to second spot after a 2-1 victory over Tenerife on Sunday evening. Jesús Rueda opened the scoring for the locals in only the second minute with a direct free kick, and Roger, Alfaro and Bergdich all wasted chances to increase the lead before the break. Substitute Timor did make it two though with another free kick some twenty minute in to the second half, but Uli dávila got one back for the Canary Islanders in injury time to set up a nail-biting end. Betis are back in their stride as well after their set-back against Albacete last weekend, a 1-3 win at Girona taking them to within a point of the Catalans in the table. A win would have taken the locals level with Las Palmas at the top, and Felipe Sanchón gave them an early lead after Adán could only block a shot by Pere Pons. Rubén Castro picked up a Matilla assist to make it all square soon afterwards though, and Lejeune turned a Jordi Figuera cross in to his own net before Castro wrapped things up with twenty minutes to go.

Further down the table, Racing Santander picked up their first point of the season in a 2-2 draw at Leganés. The Cantabrians will be disappointed that they didn’t get more out of this though after they went two up by half time, Concha scoring the opener after a Francis shot was blocked some ten minutes before the break, and Koné firing home an impressive second just a minute later. Diamanka picked up a Rubén Peña centre to get one back though on the hour mark, and with the visitors down to ten men after Andreu was shown a straight red card, Alvaro García scored a last minute equalizer after Eizmendi headed against the woodwork. Results elsewhere meant that Numancia started the last game of the weekend down in the drop zone, but a 0-1 victory over Albacete took them above their hosts and up to eleventh place. Braian Rodríguez headed in a Gerrit cross to give the visitors the lead in the seventh minute, and although Pedraza was sent off some twenty minutes in to the second half for a tackle from behind on Cidoncha, the ten men held on for a much needed win. Las Palmas extended their lead at the top of the table after a convincing 4-1 win over Alcorcón on Saturday evening. Hernán and Araujo combined to set up Nauzet for the first in the twenty-fifth minute, and Araujo made it two after picking up a Momo assist midway through the second half. Oscar Plano got one back for the visitors a couple of minutes later, but almost immediately Araujo latched on to Hernán’s headed pass to beat Falcón once again (his seventh goal in five games), and with twelve minutes to go Momo wrapped things up after Guzmán played Valerón’s through ball in to his path. The Canary Islanders stay two points ahead of Sporting Gijón, who are up to second overnight after beating Mirandés 0-2. Pablo Pérez was the hero of the day, the latest of a long string of home-grown players taking advantage of a mistake by Alex Ortíz to open the scoring shortly before the interval, and then helping himself to a second after Jony set him up on the hour mark. The Asturians are now two points clear of Recreativo, who were held to a 0-0 draw by Lugo in the first match of the weekend. Both teams had already drawn twice without goals this season, and keepers Dani Sotres and José Juan made sure of a result which favoured the visitors, who now have five points in as many games, despite only scoring one goal to date.

Ponferradina drop to fourth pending Sunday’s games after losing 1-0 at Sabadell. The visitors were left with ten men when Yuri was sent off for a retaliatory head-butt on Cristian midway through the first half, and Juanto headed in what was to prove the only goal from a Longás cross just a minute after the restart. Juanto himself was sent off for a second bookable offence with a few minutes to go, but Nauzet and his defence held fast for their first win of the season. Barcelona B stay behind Ponfe after they too were beaten 0-1 by regional neighbours Llagostera. Juanjo headed against the bar before Patric turned Eloy Gila’s cross in to his own net in the twentieth minute, and visiting keeper René made important saves from Dongou and Halilovic after the interval to give the newly promoted side their first away win ever at this level. Zaragoza also won 1-0 against Alavés to clock up their first victory of the current campaign. The Maños had thrown away one goal leads in the last minutes of their last two home games, but Borja Bastón put them ahead after picking up a pass from Dorca with half an hour gone, and this time they held on for the three points.
