Betis had already ensured themselves a berth in the next round a couple of weeks ago, but they needed to beat Rijeka and hope that Olympique Lyon lost at Guimaraes to tie up that top spot in group I which they needed to avoid being drawn against a difficult opponent. However in the end they had to settle for second place after a disappointing 0-0 draw, a reality check for new coach Juan Carlos Garrido. News that Lyon were losing early on inspired the Andalusians for a few minutes, Vargic having to save from Juanfran and Salva Sevilla, Juan Carlos and Chuli all going close. Before half time though Benko and Krstanovic missed easy chances, and there were whistles from the crowd as the players left the pitch at the break. The game continued in the same vein after the restart, Chuli in particular firing a shot wide when free on goal, and to add to Garrido's woes, Xavi Torres was carried off with a serious injury which may keep him out for a long time. At least Betis are still in the competition, but unless the new boss can find the right formula to turn things around, that won't be the case for much longer.
