Two spectacular goals by Griezmann and Seferovic against Olympique Lyon virtually ensured Real Sociedad their place in the league stage of the competition. The last time the Basque side played in the competition some ten years ago they were beaten at the knock-out stage by today's opponents, but they started well, Carlos Vela hitting the post before Griezmann (who actually attended that match in Lyon ten years ago) opened the scoring with an impressive scissors kick from Vela's long cross. If that was unexpected, even more so was the second goal, new signing Seferovic thrashing a shot over the head of Anthony Lopes from well outside of the area down the left flank with the second half only minutes old. Gonalons headed against the bar and Bravo had to pull off an important save from Miguel Lopes, but Bisevac got himself sent off for a second bookable offence, and substitute Rubén Pardo wasted a chance to make it three when free on goal near the end.
