Real Madrid are close to a place in the final once again after they beat city rivals Atlético Madrid 3-0 in a bad-tempered match at the Bernabeu stadium. Pepe opened the scoring with just over a quarter of an hour gone, his shot taking a deflection off Insúa to wrong-foot Courtois. And after that the locals totally dominated the first half, the visiting keeper having to save from Jesé and Modric, and Di María and Ronaldo seeing efforts go wide. Atlético’s first real chance didn’t come until early in the second half, when Godín headed Koke’s corner just over the top, but a few minutes later Jesé ran on to Di María’s through ball to turn a shot past Courtois for his team’s second. Modric did clear another Godín header from under the posts with Casillas beaten, but with seventeen minutes to go fortune smiled on Ancelotti’s side again, Di María’s shot from outside of the area hitting Miranda and bouncing back in to the net. The defending champions are reeling against the team they beat in last season’s final, and with Villa injured, Diego Costa suspended (after getting booked for reacting to intense provocation) and Casillas yet to let in a goal in the competition this year, it is difficult to see them turning this one around when hostilities resume next Tuesday.
