Athletic Bilbao completed the formalities, qualifying for the league stage of the competition after a 9-3 aggregate win over HJK Helsinki. With a six goal lead from the first leg Bielsa rested many of his key players, but the replacements struggled and only ended up saving a draw in the dying minutes. Athletic did have the better of the play, but they found themselves two down through strikes by Schüller and Perovuo twenty minutes or so either side of half time. San José got one back from an Ibai Gómez free kick before Pohjanpalo restored the two goal lead, and late goals from Toquero and Igor (the second with the locals down to ten men after Pelvas was sent off) at least saved Athletic's pride.
