Athletic Bilbao produced another classic performance to beat Manchester United 2-1, their second victory over the Premier League leaders in eight days. Llorente passed a late fitness test to play, and he stayed on just long enough to .open the scoring with an impressive volley midway through the first half. Giggs and Young had efforts blocked before the break as the visitors came back, but Iraola almost scored again after a dazzling run, and Toquero fired another good chance over the top. Twenty minutes in to the second half De Marcos made it two after Toquero's header was cleared, and needing three goals to even level the tie, Sir Alex Ferguson decided to give up the ghost and rest some of his key players for other challenges. De Gea prevented Athletic from adding to their lead, and Rooney got a late consolation with ten minutes to go, beating Iraizoz with a strong shot from outside of the area. But this was Athletic's night, and the San Mamés stadium was buzzing with excitement and speculation about just how far their talented young team can go.
