Athletic Bilbao were first to kick off in this season's Europa League, and they came away from Slovan Bratislava with a 1-2 win. The Slovakians had made it through to the league stage after knocking out Luis Enrique's Roma, and Zofcak brought an early save out of Iraizoz from a wide free kick. A few minutes later though Athletic went ahead, Susaeta poking a shot past Putnocky after Llorente and Muniain combined to set him up. Guede equalised for the locals after a first shot by Bagayoko had been saved, but before half time Muniain restored the lead with an impressive strike, lifting the ball over a defender before volleying a first time shot past the keeper. Slovan came out strongly after the break, Iraizoz saving from Guede and Sebo having a goal disallowed for a previous foul. But Bielsa's side held fast for a first victory under the new coach, and hopefully more is to come as they adapt to his new style of play.
