Atlético Madrid are close to a place in the league stage of the competition after beating Vitoria Guimaraes 2-0. Manzano's side had the better of the first half, with Silvio hitting the bar and Tiago and Mario Suárez just failing to find the target. The Portuguese side rallied after the restart though, with Targino hitting the post. But Joao Paulo got himself sent off for bringing down Adrián as he advanced on goal, and three minutes later substitute Eliás got clear of his marker to head Adrián's lifted cross down past Nilson. Six minutes after that the two combined again for Elías to beat the keeper for a second time, and from then on it was run down the clock to the final whistle.
