Euro 2012 quarter finals

Spain 2 - France 0

Spain are through to the last four of this year's Euro 2012 championships after beating France 2-0 in their quarter final in Donetsk! Once again without an orthodox centre forward in the starting line-up, Xabi Alonso was the hero of the evening for Del Bosque's side. Playing his 100th game for his country, the Real Madrid midfielder scored both goals, heading the opener from Jordi Alba's cross in the twentieth minute, and converting an injury time penalty after substitute Pedro was brought down by Reveillère. Spain had never beaten France in official competitions, and although Laurent Blanc put out defensive line-up, Casillas was still called upon to make a couple of important saves, the best of which from Cabaye's free kick shortly before half time. Debussy also headed over a Ribèry cross soon after the restart, but otherwise the defending champions were in control with their quick passing game, and Fàbregas in particular could have scored again on two or three occasions after the break. Spain go on to meet neighbours Portugal, also in Donetsk, in Wednesday evening's semi-final. (23.06.12)
