With Piqué and Puyol out injured, Vicente Del Bosque decided it was time to renew his defence for this season's fixtures. The coach therefore called up Montoya (Barcelona B), Domínguez (Atlético) and Botía (Sporting) to his squad for the upcoming matches against Chile and Liechtenstein, the three uncapped players joining Mata, Javi Martínez and Thiago from the recent European under 21 championship winning squad. The call up of Montoya (who has only played 18 minutes in the first division) means there are nine Barcelona players, despite the absence of the two central defenders. Meanwhile Luis Milla named his new under 21 squad, largely based on the squad which was called up for the recent under 20 World Cup. The new crop begin their defence of the title with a double header against Georgia at the start of next month. (25.08.11)
