Spain's under 20 side qualified for the last eight after a thrilling penalty shoot out against South Korea. Julen Lopetegui's team were favourites to go through after finishing top of their group. But they were unable to penetrate a well-disciplined defence, and they were limited to sporadic long shots for the first 45 minutes. Korea in fact came closest to scoring in the first half, Fernando Pacheco doing well to keep out Kim Young-Uk, and soon after the break Lopetegui made his first two substitutions to try and change things around. It was not though until late into extra time that Tello and Vázquez came close to scoring, and in the end it went to penalties. Koke fired Spain's third spot kick over the bar, but Pacheco saved from Kije straight afterwards, and after thirteen successful conversions, Kim Kyung Jung steered his kick over the top. Spain were through, but they will have to do better if they are to beat Brazil in the quarter finals. (10.08.11)
