Real Madrid were a few seconds away from victory against CSKA Moscow in their first leg tie before the Russian side saved a draw in injury time. With temperatures five below zero it was never going to be an easy game, and Dzagoev volleyed just wide of the post in the opening minutes. Benzema fired a shot wide at the other end but injured himself in the process, and his replacement Higuaín, together with Khedira, brought a double save out of Chepchugov only a couple of minutes later. With just under half an hour on the clock Madrid took the lead, Cristiano Ronaldo forcing a shot past the keeper after Schennikov could only deflect Coentrão's cross in to his path. And after the restart Ronaldo could have added to the lead, Chepchugov getting a hand to a first effort, and the Portuguese forward firing another shot wide when free on goal. Honda did force Casillas in to a good save with a well struck free kick, but it looked as if Madrid were going to take a win back to the Bernabeu until the Berezutsky brothers headed Dzagaev's cross over for Wernbloom to poke the ball in to the net. Disappointment for Mourinho's side, although a score draw away from home should be enough to see them through.
