Villarreal's dreams of reaching a first ever Europa League final were shattered when they lost 5-1 to Porto in the first leg of their semi-final. The Spaniards held their own in an even first half, and Cani headed them in to the lead from Nilmar's cross just before the break. But three minutes after the restart Falcao levelled the scores from the penalty spot after Diego López brought him down in the area, and on the hour mark Guarín put the locals in front when he headed past the keeper at the second attempt. After that Garrido's team fell apart, and Falcao added three more before the end to virtually ensure an all Portuguese final against the winner of the other semi-final between Benfica and Braga.
