Villarreal drew their opening match at the knock-out stage of the competition, a result which gives them hope of making it through to the last sixteen. Nilmar got through early on only to shoot weakly at De Sanctis, and Diego López had to make a couple of saves before the break from Cavani and Lavezzi. Garrido's side felt themselves unlucky not to be awarded a penalty when Gargano blocked Cazorla's shot with his elbow late in the first half, but Cavani got the ball in the net after the restart only for the strike to be ruled out for offside. With twenty minutes to go Diego López had to save again from Lavezzi, and De Sanctis responded keeping out Borja Valero with two minutes to go. No goals in the end though, and everything will be decided next week in the Madrigal stadium. Napoli left back Aronica won't be there however after picking up a second yellow card in the last minute.
