Villarreal were surprised by Dinamo Zagreb in their opening game of the Europa League, a 2-0 defeat leaving them bottom of their group. The Croatian side went ahead with just over a quarter of an hour on the clock when Rukavina Sammir put him through on a quick counter-attack. Juan Carlos Garrido had rested some of his key players for this match, but at half time he was forced to bring on Rossi and Borja Valero, with Cazorla also replacing Cani a few minutes later. But his side were left with ten men when Marcos Senna was shown a second yellow card, and although Gonzalo cleared off the line from Sammir, the Brazilian midfielder did find the net a few minutes later after Cufré won the ball in midfield and put him through.
