19 and 26 Aug | Europa League play-off round
Mallorca and Getafe qualified this year as fifth and sixth placed teams in the league, although Mallorca were subsequently banned and replaced by seventh placed Villarreal after filing for protection from creditors. Getafe and Villarreal both have to play one qualifying round, the former against APOEL Nicosia and the latter against Dnepr. Atlético Madrid are also in the competition, both as winners of last year's competition and losing cup finalists, and as defending champions they will enter at the league stage. First leg 19/08: Getafe 1 - APOEL 0; Villarreal 5 - Dnepr 0. Second leg 26/08. APOEL 1 - Getafe 1; Dnepr 1 - Villarreal 2. Both teams qualified for the league stage. See separate section for more. |

24 Aug | XXXII Santiago Bernabeu trophy
Real Madrid hosted this tournament once again. Opposition were the Uruguayan side Peñarol. W 2-0 with goals from Di María and Van der Vaart (pen). Mourinho's side have remained unbeaten during the pre-season. |
25 Aug | Gamper tournament, FC Barcelona
45th edition of FC Barcelona's annual tournament. New president Sandro Rossell invited AC Milan. Rossell was the man who brought Ronaldinho to the Nou Camp. D 1-1 with goals from David Villa and then Inzaghi. Barça won penalty shoot out 3-1, with Pinto making three saves. Ronaldinho played and was given an ovation by fans. |
27 Aug | European Super Cup Atlético Madrid took part in this season's edition after winning the newly created Europa League. Their opponents were Rafa Benítez's Inter Milan, who won the Champions League under Real Madrid's new coach Mourinho. Barcelona (3 times), Valencia (twice), Real Madrid and Sevilla have already won the trophy. Atlético won the game 0-2 with second half goals from Reyes and Agüero.
