No surprises on Wednesday, Real Madrid following in the footsteps of Barcelona with a 0-1 victory at Tottenham which takes them through to a semi-final meeting with their arch-rivals. After the four goal defeat in the first leg, Spurs were at least looking to save a bit of pride, and they felt themselves unlucky not to have a penlty in the first half when Bale, Modric and Pavyluchenko were all brought down in the area. Pavyluchenko fired a good chance well over the top and Bale had a strike ruled out for the positional offside of a colleague, and at the other end Gomes had to save from Özil early on and Cristiano Ronaldo later in the first half. Five minutes after the break though disaster struck for Harry Redknapp's team when Gomes let a long shot from Ronaldo through his hands in to the net, and although Defoe tested Casillas a couple of times after that, the fight had gone out of the Premier League side. One down, one to go! Barcelona completed the formalities on Tuesday night, beating Shakhtar Donetsk 0-1 to set up a probable semi-final meeting with arch-rivals Real Madrid. Despite the 5-1 first leg lead Guardiola was not taking any chances with his line up, with Mascherano and Busquets alternating in a central defensive role in the absence of Puyol and Abidal. The Ukraininan side knew they would have to score quickly if they were to have any hope, and Valdés was in action early on to keep out Douglas Costa and Jadson. Messi and Afellay brought good saves out of Pyatov in response, and with the first half coming to an end Messi picked up a return pass from Dani Alves to open the scoring. Valdés had to save a dangerous Jadson free kick before the break and a shot from Mkhitaryan after the restart, but this one was already over in the Nou Camp. (12.04.11)
