Real Madrid are on track for a place in the quarter finals of the competition for the first time in seven years after drawing 1-1 at Olympique Lyon. Benzema came on as a second half substitute to combine with Özil and Ronaldo to open the scoring against his old side less than a minute later, but Gomis saved a draw for the French side late on after Cris headed across a long Pjanic free kick. Chances had been few and far between in the first half, with Lloris tested by a deflected Ronaldo free kick, and Gomis firing a shot over the bar after Casillas spilled a cross from Bastos at his feet. Early in the second half Ronaldo thumped a wide free kick against the far upright, Ramos headed a corner against the bar, and Ronaldo had a penalty appeal turned down when Gourcuff clearly blocked another free kick with his upraised arm. Benzema's away goal put things right, but Gomis's equaliser means that Madrid still have a lot to do in three weeks' time. (22.02.11)
