A day to forget for Spanish sides in the Europa League, with three of the four teams losing on the opening day. Defending champions Atlético Madrid were beaten 1-0 by Aris Salonika, the only goal being scored by a Spaniard, ex Barcelona midfielder Javito. Sevilla lost 0-1 at home to Paris Saint Germain, with Nené netting for the French side late on. And Villarreal also fell to a 2-0 defeat at Dinamo Zagreb, Rukavina and Sammir scoring for the Croatians. Marcos Senna was sent off after picking up a second booking midway through the second half. Getafe were the only La Liga team to win, although they too went a goal down to a free kick from Odense's Andreasen before second half strikes from Arizmendi and Pedro Ríos gave them a 2-1 victory.
