So that's it then, the transfer window has closed, and clubs can get down to the business of playing football. As always, there was a mad rush in the last two days, especially as many teams waited to see how the opening day panned out before completing their squads. Barcelona and Real Madrid were looking to lighten their loads though, and as well as offloading Cáceres and Hleb, the Blaugrana were finally able to tie up a deal with AC Milan for Ibrahimovic. In the end it was couched as a one year loan with a buy out clause of 24 million at the end (depending on how you value Eto'o, 60 Mio or so below what they paid for him a season ago!), but nobody doubts that Milan will take up the option next summer.
Madrid meanwhile managed to loan out Drenthe to Hércules (he apparently wanted to stay in Spain to show his worth), and at the very last minute they transferred Van der Vaart to Tottenham for a bargain-basement 10 Mio To do so the club apparently asked the Federation on the last day to extend the deadline on foreign transfers to allow for the move to take place, something which only the two "giants" could pull off, and Spurs also had to wait for the FA to confirm that the paperwork was presented in time. Drenthe will be joined at Hércules by French mega-star David Trézéguet, who turned down several big offers to move to Alicante. That surprised us all until we learnt that his girlfriend (wife?)'s family are from the Alicante region. Sometimes money isn't everything! (02.09.10)
