Mourinho is starting to shape his side, and with Maicon too expensive even for Real Madrid, he has decided to bring an old friend Carvalho to stregthen his defence. The cheque book is still open though, and with Kaká and now Garay likely to be out for several months, more signings could be made in the next few days. Özil is the current favourite, but if he plays for Werder Bremen in next Wednesday's Champions League qualifier the interest will wane. Barcelona have also been reportedly sniffing around the German international (if only to push the price up for Madrid!), but if they go for anyone to complete a relatively small squad, it is more likely they will move for Liverpool's Mascherano. Guardiola prefers to count on his youngsters to make up the numbers, but if he relies to heavily on them he could weaken his B team, who this season are playing in the second division.
Elsewhere Atlético Madrid have finally agreed terms with Juventus for a second loan of Tiago, and Sevilla have signed the little-known Cigarini from Italy. They have a reputation for spotting great talent though, and if Luis Fabiano goes e.g. to Marseille (who are making a big bid for him), they already have replacements lined up. It remains to be seen however whether Málaga's new owners have the same eye for undiscovered stars - they have spent quite a bit of money on players who are unknown in Spain, and are letting go of many of the squad who saved them from relegation last year. Only time will tell if they have got it right! (15.08.10)
