An injury time goal by David Silva saved a draw for Spain in the new season's first friendly international against Mexico. Although most of his World Cup squad were present, Del Bosque's starting line-up only included Casillas, Puyol and Busquets from the eleven who began the final in Johannesburg, with Villarreal's Bruno making his full international debut. Many of his players had only just returned from vacation though, and with the long journey also taking it's toll, it was not surprising that the hosts took an early lead when Chicharito Hernández beat the offside trap to shoot wide of Casillas. Some brave defending by Marchena prevented Mexico from increasing their lead, and Spain's only reply in the first half was a long shot by Cazorla which bent past Ochoa on to the bar. Both sides made the usual string of substitutions after the restart, but it looked as if the World champions were heading for defeat until Xavi found Silva for him to score a late equaliser.
