Real Madrid made sure of top spot in their group with a comfortable 0-4 win over Ajax on Tuesday night. With qualification already in the bag Mourinho rested some of his key players. But even so they were on top, and with ten minutes to go to half time Özil played back Xabi Alonso's long ball allowing Benzema to open the scoring.
Before the half time whistle Arbeloa got a second after Cristiano Ronaldo's free kick came back off the defensive wall, and after Stekelenberg saved from Ronaldo and Casillas did likewise from Vertonghen, Ronaldo picked up a pass from Di María to make it three. The Dutch keeper did well to keep out an Özil free kick after that, but with ten minutes to go the German midfielder was pushed over in the area by Emanuelson, and Ronaldo stepped up to score his second of the night from the spot.
The game ended with Xabi Alonso and Sergio Ramos getting themselves sent off after picking up second bookings for time wasting, conveniently therefore missing the meaningless last group game against Auxerre. A perfect night for Madrid, and this time they will be hoping to get further than the last sixteen.
